Sri Lanka Warmly welcomes Spicejet

India’s SpiceJet from 09OCT10 is launching its first International service

India’s SpiceJet will expand its services to Sri Lanka starting from 9th October this year.

The airline through news paper advertisements today announced that it will operate flights from Colombo to Chennai and Chennai to Colombo.

The first flight will leave to Chennai from Colombo at 03.15 am on the 9th of October.

Apart from SpiceJet, Jetair too announced earlier of its plans to launch Charter flights to Sri Lanka from Brussels, starting from next month.

Since the defeat of the LTTE by the armed forces in May 2009, 4 new international airlines have already started operations to Sri Lanka.

Air Asia, Fly Dubai, Oman Air and Indian Express are those airlines.

Booming tourism arrivals to the country following the end of the conflict is the major reason behind the interest shown by these airlines.

During the 1st 7 months of this year Sri Lanka has seen its visitor numbers climbing by 47% to stand at 341,991 compared to just 229,952 arrivals reported during the same period last year.

Sri Lanka Tourism hopes the annual figure will run up to 550,000 visitors by the end of 2010.
